Toyota Egypt continues airbag recall for Corolla, Yaris and Avensis
In short
Toyota Egypt continues a recall to inspect and replace Takata airbag parts in Corolla, Yaris and Avensis cars. The replacement is completely free, with free engine oil and an oil filter.
Toyota Egypt, the exclusive distributor of Toyota in Egypt, continues a recall to inspect and replace airbag parts made by Takata of Japan.
Models covered
- Corolla, 2002 to 2013
- Yaris sedan, 2005 to 2010
- Avensis, 2003 to 2008
- Yaris hatchback, 2013 to 2015
Why the recall exists
Toyota first launched the recall in mid-2015. It followed the crisis that exposed defects in some Takata airbags. That crisis led to one of the largest car recalls in the world and ended with the Japanese company going bankrupt.
A faulty airbag can inflate in a violent crash and throw metal fragments. That can cause serious injuries.
What owners get
Toyota Egypt runs an online service on its official website. Owners enter the car's VIN to see whether it needs the inspection or the airbag replacement.
The company asked owners of covered cars to contact the nearest authorized service center, confirm their car is included and book a replacement appointment as soon as possible.
In a post on its official Facebook page, the company said the replacement is completely free, with no costs for owners. It added that owners also get free engine oil and an oil filter when the replacement is done at authorized service centers.
Toyota stressed that responding to recalls is a preventive step to protect drivers and passengers, since some of these models are still on the road.
