Cairo bans tuk-tuks on main streets in Dar El Salam from 10 October
In short
Cairo governorate bans three-wheeled tuk-tuks on several main streets in Dar El Salam from Saturday 10 October and will confiscate those caught. The Bajaj Qute, a four-wheeler, is priced at EGP 224,900.
Cairo governorate has banned three-wheeled tuk-tuks on a number of main streets and axes in the Dar El Salam district. The ban applies from Saturday 10 October.
The decision aims to organise traffic and limit the random behaviour of these vehicles, which block traffic flow on many main streets.
What gets confiscated
The governorate stressed that it will confiscate tuk-tuks caught on these roads:
- Masr Helwan Agricultural Road
- Fayoum Road
- Nile Corniche
- The slow lane
- The Ring Road
Vehicles caught going against traffic will also be confiscated.
The Bajaj Qute alternative
With the ban in force, talk is back about the four-wheeled Bajaj Qute replacing the tuk-tuk. Some governorates, Cairo among them, have adopted it as an alternative to organise transport and improve the look of the streets.
GB Auto offers the 2026 Bajaj Qute in the local market this October at an official price of EGP 224,900.
The Qute can be used personally and by families, but it is licensed as a taxi. It carries four people. Its stated range is up to 550 km without refuelling, made up of 250 km on petrol and 300 km on natural gas.
It has a 217 cc four-stroke dual-fuel engine producing up to 13 hp. Top speed is 70 km/h.
Its size is 2,752 mm long, 1,312 mm wide and 1,652 mm high. The wheelbase is 1,925 mm and ground clearance is 180 mm. It has passenger seat belts and child safety locks.
Other governorates
Giza was first to announce a plan to replace tuk-tuks. It offers EGP 10,000 cashback and a EGP 1,000 discount on licence fees. It has also begun allowing the Qute near several archaeological areas, and for moving residents in areas including Haram, Agouza, 6th of October City and Hadayek October.
Six other governorates have said they allow the Qute to be licensed as a taxi for passengers: Dakahlia, Menoufia, Qalyubia, Minya, Aswan and Ismailia.
