New car licence rules in Egypt cut costs by 400 to 600 EGP

In short

Traffic units began a new licensing system on 1 October 2026. The Interior Ministry says fees fall by 400 to 600 EGP, and 3 safety items are no longer required.

Traffic units across Egypt started a new system for issuing and renewing car licences on 1 October 2026. It cuts costs, simplifies the steps and adds a one-window service with electronic payment inside the traffic units.

Fees fall by 400 to 600 EGP

The Interior Ministry announced that licence issue and renewal costs drop by 400 to 600 EGP. The exact saving depends on the vehicle type and the procedure.

The total still varies

A renewal bill has several parts: tax, compulsory insurance, the licence fee, plates, the electronic sticker, a violations certificate and other services. There is no single figure that fits every car.

The basic annual tax depends on engine size. For example, it is about 750 EGP for engines above 1330 cc and up to 1630 cc. It is about 3000 EGP for engines above 1630 cc and up to 2030 cc. Other fees come on top.

3 items no longer required

Owners no longer have to present a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit or a reflective warning triangle when issuing or renewing a licence. In the shops, these 3 items cost 1300 to 1425 EGP in total, depending on type, quality and where they are bought. That is what they cost to buy. It is not a fee collected by traffic units.

One window, electronic payment

The one-window system covers both vehicle licences and driving licences. Payment goes through the electronic collection system in the traffic units. The ministry said no extra money will be collected under any name, apart from traffic violations issued by the traffic prosecution.
